The Culture Club had a fascinating visit to The Prince of Wales Park on Monday 9th June. We were met by Alan Mirfield who led us round and explained to us all the things the "Friends" of the park were doing to try and restore the park to its former glory and all the plans they had for the future. Contrary to how it looks on the photo the weather was very nice for most of the time - it was just at the end that the heavens decided to open! We had lunch afterwards at The Five Rise Hotel and were absolutely drenched by the time we got there! Nine of us had a lovely evening yesterday as guests of Steeton Flower Club. The demonstrator was Vanessa Wellock, she did some amazing designs and was full of helpful tips. As seems to be becoming the norm for one of us won an arrangement in the raffle; this time it was the turn of our President, Gaye - it's always been our Treasurer previously so it's about time someone else had a turn!! Well done, Gaye! I'll put some more photos in our Photo Gallery. 11 of us braved the wind and rain on Thursday evening to go to Steeton Flower Club's Christmas "extravaganza" at Skipton Town Hall. Carola Kean had travelled all the way from Hereford to give her demonstration entitled "From the Christmas Clutter". Yet again one of our members won an arrangement in the raffle and if you compare this photo to last year's you will see that it is the same person as well! Well done Jean! Proceeds from the evening went to Help for Heroes. PS I was at Jean's on Friday and the flowers looked amazing on her sideboard!!
The production of The Sound of Music at Bingley Little Theatre the other day was excellent. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Fourteen of us headed to Skipton Town Hall on Thursday evening for Steeton Flower Club's annual Christmas Demonstration. This year's demonstrator was David Ryland and we weren't disappointed - he gave us a wonderful floral extravaganza entitled A Christmas Compendium and we were nearly falling off our chairs with some of his amusing tales - he even sang for us at the end! The evening was topped off nicely when two of our members won one of his arrangements each in the raffle. Monday 11th July was a busy day for Harden WI as we had the Walking Group, Culture Club and monthly meeting all on the one day!! The Walking Group started the day with a bus trip from Harden to Bingley but from there we walked along the canal to East Riddlesden Hall. We then became the Culture Club where we were joined by others who had driven down and we were treated to a wonderfully informative tour of the Hall as a follow up to the talk we were given at our monthly meeting in April about the Murgatroyds of East Riddlesden Hall. We had lunch at the cafe there before returning to Harden - the walkers hitching lifts with those who had driven down. And I forgot to say that as always (well, nearly!) the weather was kind to us!
We just had a few hours to catch up before it was time for our monthly meeting - an excellent talk on Humour and Humanity in the Law by Mr Reginald Le Pla. We do not have a monthly meeting or walking group in August but still have a couple of other events on our calendar - our regular annual August outing and a visit to Bardsey WI. Have a look at our Diary of Events page for more information. Yesterday 9 of us had a day out visiting this spectacular garden. The weather couldn't have been more perfect in the morning for us and after we had had a good look round Liz provided tea and coffee and some really tasty cake which apparently was the Queen Mother's favourite recipe and I can quite understand why! As we got into our cars to leave for our next important engagement - a pub lunch - a big black cloud appeared and the heavens opened....we got to the pub and it stopped raining just long enough for us to get inside and then we were treated to a dramatic thunderstorm while we had our lunch. Needless to say, by the time we came out it was a gloriously sunny day again! Next, we visited a garden centre just along the road and several purchases were made. We couldn't leave without trying the refreshments in the cafe and some of us couldn't resist sampling the cakes!! And, of course, while we were in there there was a dramatic hail storm! We had a wonderful day out and I think some of our members will be having rather a busy day today planting all their purchases! |
